A nationally representative Pew survey finds about one‑third of U.S. adults have left an online community and that the most common reason by far is simply losing interest (over 80% of leavers), while politics is named by only about four‑in‑ten. Other contributing factors include declining content quality, life changes, arguing/toxicity and time spent online.
— This challenges the common assumption that political polarization is the primary cause of people leaving online communities, shifting policy attention toward engagement, content quality and design rather than only political moderation.
