Hispanic Identity vs Census Categories

Official Hispanic counts (Census, ACS) treat Hispanic origin as an ethnicity that can cross racial categories, but many people with Hispanic ancestry do not identify as Hispanic or select different race labels; survey wording, question order and outreach (including language of the instrument) materially change measured totals and demographic profiles. Pew’s 2025 update — including a 70 million Hispanic population estimate and a large National Survey of Latinos sample — shows these definitional and measurement gaps remain central to who is counted and how they are described. — If policymakers, researchers and media conflate ancestry, origin, race and identity, they will misread demographic trends and misallocate resources or misstate representation.
