Maps Reroute Drivers to Cut Congestion

Google Research routed small fractions of trips via Google Maps in ten U.S. cities to spread traffic across corridors, raising mean speeds (about 0.5–4.6% depending on city) and trimming travel time and CO2 slightly. The intervention was run at the margin to avoid inducing more driving, and the company declined to say whether cities or drivers were informed. — If platforms can nudge city traffic at scale, that shifts who governs public infrastructure and creates questions about consent, accountability, equity and environmental trade‑offs.
