Political actors often collapse distinct Bay‑Area subcultures into a single target (for example, lumping Rationalists, Extropians, and Effective Altruists together) which enables easier public attack but misreads the movement dynamics and drivers behind tech policy debates. That mislabeling changes which actors are accountable and shifts the debate from technical policy to culture‑war storytelling. — If politicians keep mislabeling and weaponizing specific tech intellectual circles, public debate about AI and tech policy will be distorted and accountability misdirected.
